What do LGBTQ people struggle with?

LGBTQ people are as varied as any group, but there are common stressors shaped by stigma. Many experience family rejection, bullying, or social isolation, particularly during adolescence. Discrimination in housing, employment, health care, and religious spaces can affect safety and economic stability.

Internalized shame, minority stress, and fear of violence can increase risk for anxiety, depression, self harm, and substance use. Trans and nonbinary people often face additional barriers related to affirming medical care and legal recognition. In unsupportive environments, constantly assessing whether it is safe to be out can be exhausting over time. Supportive relationships, affirming spaces, and competent mental health care can make a meaningful difference.
