Are all therapists LGBTQ friendly?

No, not all therapists are LGBTQ friendly, and it is important not to assume they are. Some providers are genuinely affirming, educated on LGBTQ issues, and experienced in supporting queer and trans clients. Others may mean well but have limited knowledge or rely on stereotypes, which can still feel invalidating.

A minority may hold openly negative or pathologizing views, even if they do not express them directly at first. Because of this range, many LGBTQ people look for explicit statements of affirmation, relevant training, or inclusion in LGBTQ friendly directories. In early sessions, it is reasonable to ask about a therapist’s experience with queer and trans clients and to notice how they speak about identity.
